Suffolk - An elderly couple were found dead in their isolated home off Hosier Road Friday afternoon, both with gunshot wounds in their chest.Police said Dewey Jones and his wife Claudine were found about 3:50 pm by a relative who came to their home at 1169 Hosier Road.The house, covered with green asbestos shingles, is on a dirt path several hundred yards from the road. Built in a wooded area, the nearest neighbor is almost a mile away. Several junked automobiles are on the premises.Jones and his wife were pronounced deat at the scene by Dr. Milton Chalkley, medical examiner, and the bodies were sent to the state crime lab in Norfolk.Suffolk police detective Thomas Newsome said Jones and his wife were found in the living room. Jones who had undergone several operations for throat cancer and was known to be in poor health, police said, were facedown on the floor between a couch and a coffee table. His wife was sprawled on another couch.Newsome said Jones had been shot twice, his wife three times."The house was not ransacked," Newsome said, "and there was no sign of forced entry." We really don't know at this point wheather robbery was a motive or not."Some change was found, he added, and two Social Security checks delivered to the couple Friday morning were undistrubed.No suspect had been apprehended late Friday despite an intensive search by the majority of available police officers.Police said that Jones had retired several years ago and that he and his wife, also retired, lived alone. The time of death is not known yet, the detective added, but has been tentatively established as between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm.Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but are being handled by I.O. Hill and Co. Funeral Home.
