Samuel L. Turner was the son of Elisha Turner & Jane Ward. He married Mahala Jane Landis on 13 Dec 1848 at Apple Creek Twp, Cape Girardeau, County, Missouri. He married Elizabeth Dennis in 1889

Samuel L. Turner, was born December 29, 1827, in Tennessee. He and his wife, Mahalia Landis Turner, lived in the Washington township of Laclede County. Mahalia Turner, Died in 1887 (Born May 8, 1830 and died September 17, 1887). He then married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Dennis in 1889. Mr. Turner was a Civil War veteran who served as a Union Captain. He was buried beside his first wife, Mahalia, in the Turner Cemetery. He leaves sons, Elisha L., Samuel and Charley, and daughters, Melissa, Mary J.(Born July 24, 1857 and died January 3, 1888), Ida E. and Rosie E.

On Tuesday, August 10, 1897, at 3:18 a.m., in Lebanon, Captain Samuel Turner, died, after a lingering illness, of sciatic rheumatism, at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 11 days.

Captain Turner had been confined to his bed for over a year, suffering intensely from his affliction, and during the latter part of his illness was partly paralyzed.

The deceased was one of Laclede County's oldest citizens, having lived here since 1859. He was born in Roane County, Tennessee, but removed to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, when he was 16 years of age. At the age of 21 he married Miss Mahala J. Landis, who bore him 10 children, of whom 8 survive him. In 1859, then aged 31, he removed his family to Laclede County, where he has since resided.

He served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865, and was engaged in the battle of Pea Ridge and many other skirmishes, being promoted to second lieutenant and then to captain.

In 1887 his wife died and in 1889 he was married to Elizabeth Dennis, who survives him.

The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, the 11th, and the remains were interred in the Turner family cemetery. All of the children, three sons and two daughters from Coffeyville and one daughter from Ossawatomic [Osawatomie], Kansas and two sons, here, W. F. and S. S. Turner, were present.

In the death of Captain Turner Laclede County lost a good citizen. He lived an upright life and leaves behind him an unblemished record. He did the world some good in life and the memory of his deeds will live after him.
