Casey Certis-Milby passed peacefully on April 9, 2009, at Tara Home at the Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel, at the age of 56 years.

Born Kathryn Mary Certis, raised in Orchard Park, NY and graduated summa cum laude from Buffalo State College; Casey took a new name shortly after her arrival in Santa Cruz County where she resided for 33 years until her death.

Casey earned various teaching credentials and certificates from San Jose State. She was a dedicated high school teacher, most recently teaching at Santa Cruz High where she was the Department Chair of the Special Education Department and staff sponsor of the Rainbow Alliance. Prior to that, Casey taught at the Ark and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.

Casey's many interests included gardening, playing and enjoying music, reading and book clubs, travel, and she especially enjoyed supporting the Santa Cruz High School Boys Soccer Team. She also enjoyed a 20 year Iyengar Yoga practice and since 1992 sponsored a Tibetan refuge in Mungod, India. Throughout her life she supported a variety of humanitarian causes.

Casey is survived by her husband, Robert Milby of Santa Cruz, her father, Frank Certis, sisters Carol, Lori, brothers John, Tom and Jim, and four nieces and three nephews all of whom reside in New York.

Although her life was much shorter than we wanted, Casey's honesty, integrity and idealism made a significant contribution to her family, her students and the community. Her contagious laugh and great sense of humor, her intelligence and insights, and her concern for others will be greatly missed.

Casey's family would like to thank the friends, neighbors, and co-workers who lent support during her illness. Every visit, prayer, meal and phone call will forever be appreciated.

A memorial for Casey will be held on Thursday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Santa Cruz County or WomenCARE of Capitola.
