Artist. He had a national reputation as a portrait artist, landscape artist and photographer. His subjects included prominent political and social figures of the day, most notably President Andrew Jackson and actor Edwin Forrest. A native of Cincinnati, he relocated to Baltimore in 1856 where he became increasingly well-known as an artist and photographer. During the Civil War, he was a supporter of the Confederacy, but later took an oath of Allegiance to the Union, according to his obituary published in Philadelphia newspaper, "The Times," on July 30, 1895. By the 1870s, he had established studios in Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey. He was a close friend of the celebrated poet Walt Whitman. His son John R. Johnston, Jr. was an operatic singer and stage actor known to the public under the stage name John J. "Jack" Raffael.
