Popularly known as "The Blond Knight of Germany", he flew over 1,400 air combat mission for the Luftwaffe, and scored a confirmed 352 aerial victories, making him by far the greatest fighter air ace in the history of aerial warfare. He was after the war imprisoned by the Soviets.
