Harold “Gene” Smith, 82, of Mansfield, passed away at Crystal Care of Mansfield on Saturday, January 4, 2020. Gene was born in Carter County, Kentucky on February 3, 1937. He was the son of Edward and Gladys (Binion) Smith.

Gene retired from AK Steel after 38 years of employment. He was a member of Mansfield Baptist Temple, and loved listening to gospel music. Family was very important to Gene. He loved spending time with them and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Traveling with his wife after retirement brought both of them great enjoyment and many fond memories. A lover of the outdoors, Gene loved trapshooting and hunting.

Gene left behind his wife of 64 years, Goldie (Barker) Smith; his daughter, Diane Moon; his son, Ron (Raynette) Smith; his grandchildren, Tate (Amanda) Moon, Amanda (Josh) Mobley and Jeremy (Amanda) Ellis; his great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Walker Mobley, and Annalise Moon; his sister, Loretta (Paul) Sowards; his brother, Jim (Mary) Smith; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Earcel Smith; his sister, Marzetta Bennett; and his son-in-law, Rick Moon.
A special thank you to his caregivers and “Special Friends”, Paul, Lorretta, Ruby, Vicki, Jon and Gracie.

Family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Road. Services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 9, 2020. Gene will be laid to rest in Shauck Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
