William Carter married Mary Ann (Marion) Gilgrass (born Mortlake, Surrey; 1843-1893) on July 17th 1864, in Hammersmith, London. They came to Australia with their infant son aboard the "Oceanica", arriving in Melbourne on July 11th 1865. All together they had five children:
William George (born in Putney, Surrey; 1864-1912)
Mary Jane (born in Geelong, Victoria; 1865-1935)
Thomas Alfred (born in Geelong, Victoria; known as Alfred or Alf; 1867-1954)
John (born in Geelong, Victoria; 1869-1869)
Emma (born in Collingingwood, Victoria; 1870-1873; died after falling back into a pot of boiling water)

After Emma's death, Mary Ann went off the rails. She left her husband and children. She died of Asthma on December 21st 1893, 20 years since the death of her daughter to the month. In Mary Ann's absence, William had a de-facto relationship with a married woman named Mary (Sarah) Hannah Elizabeth Fullerton (née Smith). William and Sarah had three sons, all of whom were named with the last name Carter:
John Frederick (1882-unknown)
Sydney Charles (1883-1953)
Walter William (known as Willie; 1886-1974)

William died on November 18th 1886. His cause of death was listed of "inflammation of the lungs", which was most likely caused by Tuberculosis or Influenza. In the coming years, Sarah couldn't cope with her five children (two of which - Frederick James Orr [1874-1928] and George Smith [1877-1948] - were from her marriage to James Fullarton/Fullerton). She turned to drinking and was sent to prison in 1893 for "owning a disorganised home". Her sons became wards of state. Sarah died in 1923, aged 72.

William's second son, Alf, is my great-great-grandfather.
