Alfred was the second oldest child of Matthias and Eliza (nee Clendenning) Crane. Alfred was a carriage smith and manufacturer by trade. Born in NYC, he spend most of his life in Newark, NJ before moving to Camden, NJ just prior to his passing.

Alfred died of cholera at the young age of 39 leaving his wife Mary Anne Brower (nee Tompkins), age 29, to care for four young children: Jane Brower (age 7), John Matthias (age 5), Walter Tillou (age 3) and Alfred H. Jr (age 1).

Walter Tillou (born May 1, 1846) moved to Newark, NJ sometime after 1850 to live with his uncle Job Sayre Crane (Alfred's youngest brother) and aunt Eliza Thomas Tompkins (his mother's sister) where he lived until he died on September 6, 1923. No information has (yet) been uncovered as to where Walter is buried.
