Born in Randolph County, North Carolina where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting as a Private in Company F, 46th NC Troops at the age of 21 on March 24, 1862. He was present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia on March 7, 1863 of pneumonia.

A Confederate headstone was installed by Doug Nash in December 2006.
