Artist. A sculptor, he is best known for his work mainly in historical monuments. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Lukeman was educated under American sculptors Daniel Chester French and Launt Thompson in New York City, and French painter and sculptor Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguière at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. He is mainly remembered for his work, the statue, "The Republic", his many bas reliefs, portrait busts, and monuments, and for his participation in sculptures in Stone Mountain, Georgia, that were originally started by Gutzon Borglum. After Lukeman's involvement with the Stone Mountain sculptures ended in 1928, the work was left uncompleted for many years, finally being started again in 1963, and being finished in 1970. Some of Lukeman's other works includes The World War I monument known as "Prospect Park Memorial" in Brooklyn, the Soldiers Monument in Somerville, Massachusetts, four colossal statues for the Royal Bank of Canada headquarters in Montreal, four figures for the Brooklyn Institute, and "Manu, the Law Giver of India" on the Appellate Court Buliding in New York.
