Malaysian Monarch. He was the 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1989 to 1994, and the 34th Sultan of Perak from 1984 to 2014. Born in Batu Gajah, Perak, he was the only son of Sultan Yussuff Izzuddin Shah. He attended Malay College Kuala Kangsar, and later attended the University of Nottingham to study law, earning a Bachelor of Law degree in 1953. In 1954, he was admitted to the bar. He then became the Assistant State Secretary of Perak after returning to Malaysia. In 1965, he became the youngest judge ever appointed to the High Court of Malaya. In 1982, he became the Lord President of the Federal Court. In 1983, he served as Chancellor of the University of Malaya. In 1984, he ascended to the throne of Perak after the death of his uncle. In 1989, he succeeded Tuanku Iskandar and became the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. He was also President of the Malaysian Hockey Federation until 2005. Under his stewardship, Malaysia hosted two hockey World Cups in 1975 and 2002. For his contributions to the sport, he was known as the "Father of Malaysian Hockey".
