When asked how he lived to be 96 years old, Calvin (Kelly) Shockman said, "just keep breathing."  On December 11, 2021 Kelly took his last breath.  He died at home, surrounded by family.

Kelly was born on June 26, 1925 in LaMoure County to Michael and Kathryn (Rausch) Shockman. He grew up on the family farm near Grand Rapids, ND and graduated from Grand Rapids High School. On July 24th, 1949 he married Maxine Rasmusson.  They were married for 72 years.  Kelly and Maxine had 13 children and Kelly would joke that the pitter patter of little feet turned into a stampede.

Kelly was a steward of the land and an advocate for the American farmer. He farmed his entire life in the Grand Rapids area and worked in the fields well into his 90s.  He often joked his tombstone should read, "I farmed for many years, made good decisions and bad ones, but I sure went in the hole on this one."

Kelly was president of the North Dakota National Farmer's Organization and an executive on NFO's National Board.  He was a proud protector of the unborn and a leader at both the state and national levels for Right to Life.  Kelly served his community as a Legislator in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1982 to 1990.  He attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.

Kelly took pride in being a brother, uncle, father, and grandfather.  Shared memories include back tickling, storytelling, "this little piggy", tractor scoop rides, reunions, and bowls and bowls of Schwan's vanilla ice cream. He had a competitive nature.  He played baseball for Grand Rapids.  He enjoyed watching his family participate in a variety of activities.

Kelly appreciated the beauty of nature … the golden waves of a wheat field, the grandness of the mountains, the simple charm of the Grand Rapids park.  He was patient, kind and made family and friends feel special.  Kelly's quick wit and sense of humor kept everyone laughing.  He loved reading and had a curious nature.  He was cheerful and could be heard whistling or humming as he completed his daily work.  His faith was steadfast.   His love was unconditional.

Kelly will be missed by his wife Maxine, children Caline (Terry) Olson, Mary (Noel) Johnson, Charla (Joe) Warcken, Colette Gross, Kevin Shockman, Mark Shockman, Monica (Mike) Berry, Karyn (Dennis) Holen, Daniel (Kim) Shockman, Patrick (Tonya) Shockman, Elizabeth Carpenter, 39 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and counting.  He is preceded in death by two sons Michael and James, a great granddaughter Ainsley Adams, his parents, his step mother Ruth (Clary) Shockman, and 14 siblings Clifford, Victor, Joseph, Roman, Grace, James, Thomas, Mary, LaRayne, Lois, Kenneth, baby boy, Phyllis, and Michail.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Visitation will be held at 3:30pm on Sunday, December 19th at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in LaMoure, ND followed by a prayer service at 4:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, December 20th at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Gregory Haman as celebrant. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery near LaMoure.
