Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned officer in the 19th Massachusetts. He serve the entire war with the 19th Massachusetts rising to the rank of Colonel in command. At the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, for leading the advance of the 19th Massachusetts and the 42nd New York, in the charge made to close the gap in the line which repelled Confederate General Pickett's charge, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 6, 1891. After the war he remained in the Army, serving on the frontier in the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. He retired from Army on August 14, 1903, with the rank of Brigadier General. He is also the inventor of the Rice Trowel, the Rice Stacking Swivel and a knife entrenching tool.
