Katies, Dam of Hishi Amazon, Dead

English champion Katies, dam of Japanese champion Hishi Amazon, was euthanized Aug. 20 at the Taylor family's Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., after she was unable to rise. The 23-year-old Irish-bred mare had resided at Taylor Made since 1989 and was owned at the time of her death by Aaron and Marie Jones.

A 3-year-old in 1984, Katies won the Goffs Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) and beat the top filly Pebbles in winning the Coronation Stakes (Eng-II). For her career, she won four of 10 starts and earned $152,029.

Katies arrived in the U.S. in 1986 while in foal to English stallion Kris. The foal from that mating, Katies First, was returned to Europe to race and won a pair of stakes.

Hishi Amazon, by Theatrical, was a multiple Japanese champion who earned $6.9 million for breeder/owner Masaichiro Abe. Through Claudia Atwell Canouse, Abe had bought Katies (in foal to Alydar) for $1 million at the 1989 Fasig-Tipton November mixed sale from Crystal Springs Farm, agent.

Nine years later, Taylor Made as agent consigned Katies (in foal to Theatrical) to the 1998 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, where Aaron Jones bought her for $625,000.

Katies produced 13 named foals,10 of which were winners, including additional stakes winners What Katy Did (by Nureyev), Hishi Nile (by A.P. Indy ), and Hishi Pinnacle (by Theatrical). All five of her stakes winners were fillies. Katies also is the dam of an unnamed 2004 colt by Theatrical.

Katies (Nonoalco -- Mortefontaine, by Polic) has been buried at Taylor Made.
