Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1977 to 1987), he played at the shortstop and second base positions with the Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos and Pittsburgh Pirates. He played basketball and baseball during his years at Stringtown High School in Oklahoma. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 1972, he played collegiate baseball at Murray State University. Washington made his Major League debut as a late season call-up on September 6th, 1977 and played in 10 games that year. In 1980, he produced a career-high 150 hits and formed an effective fielding combo with second baseman Frank White which helped propel the Royals to the American League Pennant. During the 1980 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees, Washington recorded a .364 batting average. In 907 career regular season games, he compiled 703 hits, with a lifetime .251 batting average. During the course of his career, Washington will be remembered for batting while having a toothpick in his mouth. After retiring as a player, he served as a Minor League coach and manager.
