March 30, 1937 - August 23, 2018

Surrounded by his loving family, Erich Feller passed away in his home on August 23, 2018, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Erich was born in Germany on March 30, 1937. After being sponsored by his aunt and uncle, he came to America at age 20, speaking no English, and with only a suitcase. He began working at Williams Bakery, where he remained loyal for 42 years, until he retired.

Erich believed in hard work, both at his job and in life. After a few years of work, he purchased land and built his own home, where he resided until his passing. On a blind date, at a German May Day dance, Erich met Margaret Grant, whom he married one year later. Erich and Margaret celebrated 51 years of marriage and raised their four children together.

Erich encouraged a love for the outdoors with his family, by going hiking, camping, and spending time outside. He was a successful gardener, often waking up each morning to see what the new day had brought to his harvest. His generosity was obvious, as he desired to share his produce with neighbors and friends, and he would help anyone who needed assistance.

In retirement, Erich was blessed to travel many times back to Germany to visit his five younger brothers, who still reside in Germany. Traveling by themselves or with dear friends, Erich and Margaret took several cruises, enjoyed the Oregon Coast, and explored parts of the United States. Mexico held a special place in Erich's heart. Erich and Margaret returned to Mazatlan, Mexico for one month every year for 20 years, making many friendships along the way.

At the age of 69, Erich became a U.S. citizen. Erich was a long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church, participating in activities which supported the church. He also enjoyed the Whirl-A-Ways Square Dance Club, the Willamalane Men's Club, and many Oregon Ducks sporting events.

Erich was an accomplished man who will be remembered as a tough German, who prided himself on taking care of his family, being a man of his word, and having a strong, but generous work ethic. Erich was a good man, a kind man, and a gracious man. He is now at peace and in the arms of Jesus.

Erich is survived by his wife, Margaret, and his children Stefan (Karen) Feller of Edgewood, WA, Walter Sweet and Tim Sweet of Eugene, OR, and Heidi (Philip) Nordling of Federal Way, WA. Erich will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren, McKenna, Julia, Keegan, Eli, and Liesl. A memorial service in memory of Erich will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 3280 River Rd, Eugene, OR 97404, on September 7, 2018 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Hospice, 677 E. 12th Ave. Suite N110, Eugene, OR 97401, to show appreciation of their loving care for our family.
