Davis Lee Hamilton was born on November 7, 1862, in Kaufman County, Texas. Davis was the eighth child of his parents Rufus Hamilton and Martha Ballard Hamilton. He was the grandson of Robert Shaw Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Bethea Hamilton. He was also the grandson of Barclay Moorman Ballard and Mary Gillentine Ballard.

Davis did not marry. His adult life was spent primarily in Kaufman County where he farmed. By 1920 he was the head of the household for his sisters Sarah and Mary and his brother Anthony.

As did his brother Anthony, Davis died in 1936 in Kaufman County, Texas, and was buried in Rader Cemetery.
