Death claims ex-mayor of two towns
SPRING GROVE – Paul Smith, 85, formerly of North Main Street, who at different times was chief burgess of Jefferson and also mayor of Spring Grove, died Saturday at 4 a.m. at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, York, where he was a guest three and one-half years.
Husband of the late Mrs. Nettie Swartz Smith, he was a school teacher in North Codorus Township for about 45 years and was principal of Jefferson School for seven years until his retirement in 1954.
A son of the late Jacob and Maquilla Krout Smith, he belonged to Christ United Church of Christ, Jefferson, where he was a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years.
Surviving are: Two sons, Clark S. Smith, 49 W. Lincoln St., Gettysburg; Kenneth S. Smith, 836 Florida Ave., York; a daughter, Mrs. William Roth, Surf City, N.J.; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. Verna Behler, York; Mrs. Luther Kessler, Hanover; Mrs. Mary Krebs, Seven Valleys, and Mrs. Mellie Stambaugh, Spring Grove RD 2.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Sauter Funeral Home, 175 N. Main St. His pastor, Rev. George A. Heisey, will officiate. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery.
