Clayton "Speed" Carlson, 87, died on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, MN.

Funeral service will be 10:30AM on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Mark Helgeland officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. Casketbearers are Tim and David Bjerke, Cameron, Dustin, Jason, Justin, and John Carlson, Jennifer LaRoque, and Brandon Ley. Co-workers from Land O'Lakes and special friends will serve as honorary casketbearers.

Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Monday, November 24, 2008 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, Minnesota with a prayer service at 7 PM. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Clayton Otto Carlson was born May 10, 1921 at Minneapolis, the son of Carl E. and Mabel (Aune) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and in 1938, graduated from South High School. On June 23, 1944, Clayton was united in marriage to Marvel Jeanette Aune in Minneapolis. The couple made its home in Minneapolis where Clayton owned a gas station and worked as a truck driver for Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer. In 1946, Clayton and Marvel moved to Thief River Falls where they raised their family and Clayton worked as a truck driver for Land O'Lakes and sold Fuller Brush products. Following his retirement in 1983, the couple continued to live in Thief River Falls.

Clayton enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and listening to music, traveling, hunting and fishing, and especially, spending time with his family. He was a member of the Eagles Club and Odd Fellows, both in Thief River Falls. He also volunteered, delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Marvel, Clayton is survived by his four children, Donna Bjerke (Darrel Forbes) of Woodbury, MN, Marv (Kathi) Carlson and Jim (Joyce) Carlson of Thief River Falls and Marlene (Christ) Ley of Warroad, MN; nine grandchildren, Tim (Cindy) and David (Jennifer) Bjerke; Cameron and Dustin Carlson, Jason, Justin and John Carlson, Jennifer (Nathan) LaRoque, and Brandon Ley; six great grandchildren, Jessica, Derrick and Pete Bjerke, Bjorn and Mathias Carlson, and Evan LaRoque; three step great grandchildren, Rob, Skyler and Ariana; and several nieces and nephews.

Clayton was preceded in death by parents, a brother, Melvin, and two sisters, Ethel Hillburn and Helga Andrews.
