Marvel Jeanette Aune was born on April 28, 1926 on a farm in Rollis Township near Gatzke, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Gusta (Lian) Aune. She was baptized and confirmed at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke and attended school in Gatzke through the eighth grade before attending ninth grade at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls.

Marvel met Clayton Carlson at a Twin Cities bowling alley, and the couple was united in marriage on June 23, 1944 at a parsonage in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Minneapolis where Marvel worked at Joyce’s Bakery, and Clayton owned a gas station and drove truck for Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer. In 1946, the couple moved to Thief River Falls where they raised their family, and Marvel spent a number of years as a stay-at-home mom. Later, she worked boxing turkeys at Land O’ Lakes, as a butter-maker at Thief River Co-op Creamery, and as a cook at the American Legion. She also worked in the cafeteria at Northland Community College.

Marvel enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing cards, dancing, listening to music, playing bingo, and most of all, spending time with her family. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church as well as the Eagles Club and American Legion and VFW auxiliaries.

She is survived by her four children, Donna Bjerke (Darrel Forbes), Woodbury, MN; Marvin (Kathi) Carlson and Jim (Joyce) Carlson, Thief River Falls; and Marlene (Christ) Ley, Warroad. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Tim (Cindy) and David (Jennifer) Bjerke, Cameron (fiancé Sarah Caster) and Dustin (Miranda) Carlson, Jason, Justin (Kristen), and John (Krystal Roy) Carlson, Jennifer (Nathan) LaRoque and Brandon Ley; 10 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Derek, and Peter Bjerke, Bjorn and Mathias Carlson, Marla and Austin Carlson, Mackenzie Carlson, and Evan and Jillian LaRoque; three step great- grandchildren, Rob, Skyler, and Ariana; Sister-in-law Hazel Aune, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Marvel was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, brothers, Olaf, Glen, Juel, and Kenneth Aune; sisters, Esther O’Brien and Mildred Paulson.
