Juel Aune, 76, died Monday, November 9, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m. at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke with Reverend Gary Johnson officiating. Gloria Sistad was the organist, and special music was provided by Mylan and Donovan Ruud. Casketbearers were Raymond Aune, Darell Severts, Mark Severts, Jim Sparby, Steve Sparby and Glen Limesand Jr. Honorary casketbearers were his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Burial was in Moose River Cemetery in Rollis township of Marshall County. The Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Juel Marvin Aune was born on November 16, 1921 in rural Gatzke, the son of John and Gusta (Lian) Aune. He grew up and attended school in rural Gatzke. On October 6, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling. He served in the European, Normandy, northren France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe campaigns during World War II and was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945 at Camp McCoy, WI.
On June 5, 1948 Juel was united in marriage to Hazel Byklum in Grygla. The couple went into partnership with Juel's brother Glen and farmed the home place in rural Gatzke where they have since resided. In addition to farming, Juel also worked for Merickel Lumber in Wadena, Blacktop Construction in St. Louis Park and at Arctic Enterprises in Thief River Falls until the company closed in 1981.
He was a member of United Lutheran Church of Gatzke, Lions Club of Grygla, American Legion of Middle River, VFW Post of Grygla and the Grygla Senior Citizens. For many years he served on the Eckvoll township board.
Juel is survived by his wife, Hazel; four daughters, Jaylene Aune of Minneapolis, Nadine (Ed) Wold of Spring Lake Park, Sharon (Greg) Harris of Thief River Falls and Carole Aune of Minneapolis; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Glen Aune of Gatzke and Laverne (Lila) Aune of Grygla; three sisters, Esther O'Brien of St. Paul, Mildred (Fred) Paulson of Siren, WI and Marvel (Clayton) Carlson of Thief River Falls; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Olaf Aune; one sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; his in-laws, Gullick and Evelyn Byklum; one niece; and several aunts and uncles.
