LeRoy Sletten, 77, died Saturday, December 23, 2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, at Grace Luth-eran Church in Grygla with Rev. Paul Knutson officiating. Casketbearers will be Chris Wensloff, Chad Wensloff, Justin Iverson, Kevin Larson, Gus Holmes and Richard Holmes. Honorary casketbearers will be all of LeRoy's friends. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery in Valley township of Marshall county.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, December 27) from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held at the church for one hour prior to services.
LeRoy Herbert Sletten was born on January 6, 1923 in Hamre township of Beltrami county, the son of Adolph C. and Tillie (Byklum) Sletten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended area country schools through the eighth grade. After school, he worked on the family farm and also on the Oliver Howland farm.
On November 26, 1944, LeRoy enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a military policeman in Germany and France, landing in Germany one day after the war ended. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He worked for E.M. Nelson Construction for many years until his retirement.
On December 31, 1948, LeRoy was united in marriage to Mary Helen Holmes at Thief River Falls. For a short time, the couple lived in Thief River Falls and also in Grygla and Niagra, N.D. before returning to Grygla where they had since resided.
He enjoyed cutting hair, watching and feeding the birds, gardening, country music, being around cattle, hunting, watching early morning television ministries, reading his Bible, fixing things and spending time with family and friends.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Mary of Grygla; three sons, Verne, Gary and Duane (Kim), all of Grygla; two daughters, Karen (Arnold) Nelson of Wannaska and Shirley (Schell) Dahl of Roseau; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Sorenson of Grygla and JoAnn (Duane) Hovet of Milwaukee, Wisc.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harvey Sletten and one in infancy.
