During Russ' military service he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" and the Vietnam Service Medal with silver star.

Patrolman McCurry was highly esteemed by his fellow officers. In the words of one of his naval commanding officers, "Mr. McCurry was an outstanding Chief Petty Officer and will continue to service the police department (Salem) with a high level of competence."

Russ was married to the lovely Peggy Blanton. Their two daughters, Beverly and Cheryl were the "apple of their Daddy's eye".
