Aaron was the son of Col. Jeremiah Chew, who founded the town of Chews Landing . Jeremiah was desended from Thomas Chew of Upton, NJ. Aaron Chew lived in Chews Landing and was the landlord of Chews Tavern in 1776. He married Elizabeth Wood, daughter of Henry Wood in 1775. He served from 1778-1780 as a Lieutenant during the American Revolution in the Gloucester County Militia. He was captured by the British and confined in a prison ship at Ft Lott, NY. After the war he returned to Chews Landing and his tavern from 1784-1789. He divorced his wife, Elizabeth, on the grounds of wartime infidelity in 1781. He along with George Washington, who gave 15 shillings, and James Madison, also 15 shillings, were some of those instrumental in getting Church of St. John the Evangelist built. He second married Hannah Clark Gardner, daughter of Thomas Clark in 1783. Their children were: Henry Chew 1777-1823 was the Captain of the schooner "Emiline" died in La Havana, Cuba of yellow fever, Hannah, and Aaron Jr.
