Stephen A. Hathaway, 70, of near Salem, died Monday morning at the Jay County hospital in Portland, from complications following a stroke. He had been ill for the past year and in a serious condition for the last six weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the Williamson chapel in Portland. Rev. J. H. Nall will be in charge and burial will be in the New Pittsburg cemetery.
The deceased was born in Jay county on April 18, 1878, the son of George A. and Jane (Parsons) Hathaway. On September 25, 1897, he was married to Roxy Shaneyfelt, who survives.
Surviving other than the widow are two sons, George Hathaway of Fort Wayne, and Earl Hathaway of Muncie; two daughters, Mrs. Murle Numbers of Lima, Ohio, and Miss Gladys Hathaway of Richmond; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Basil Hathaway of near Dunkirk, and Leon Hathaway of Madison township, Jay county; five half sisters, Mrs. Edna Evans of Dunkirk, Mrs. Blanch Hole of Niles, Mich., Mrs. Margaret Mitchell of Bradford, Ohio, Mrs. Ada Chew of Salamonia, and Mrs. Gaynell Shirk of Portland. A son, three sisters, two brothers, one half sister and two half brothers preceded him in death.
