John Nelson, 46, of Warrensburg, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 3, 1962, in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., the son of the late Nicholas C. Nelson II and Patricia C. Synnestvedt.

After graduating with an Associate in Specialized Technology from Pennco Technical Institute in Bristol, Pa., John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

John was a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1984 to 1994. He received avionics maintenance instruction at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill. He then was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in California, where he performed classified maintenance duties on the Air Force U-2 reconnaissance aircraft until the airplane was decommissioned. John was stationed at Steinbach Air Force Base, Germany, and while in Europe, had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the European continent, visiting Italy, Spain, London and hiking through the Alps. Once his tour of duty ended in Germany, he was transferred to Travis Air Force Base, California, again working on the C-141 mobility aircraft.

After leaving the Air Force, John became a professional truck driver. He formerly worked at FedEx Ground in Phoenix, Ariz., and was currently driving the West Coast corridor for the USSF Glenmoore. He was a member of Local 955 of the Teamsters in Kansas City.

John was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and a member of both the Harley Owners Group and the Freedom of the Road Riders. He also was an extremely gifted and talented musician and truly appreciated listening to the various bands here in town. He especially loved the Nace Brothers and Cowboy Barts and the Imaginary Bank.

Special thanks to the East Pine Pub, which always made him welcome and was his second home after a long week on the road.

John is survived by his son, Travis John Smith of Rockledge, Pa.; two sisters, Jeanne M. Nelson and Kathleen Larrabee; a brother, Nicholas C. Nelson III; and his former spouse, Tracy L. Nelson.

He will be missed greatly by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, in the Players Banquet Room.
