Sudden Death of Frank Howe, Highly Respected East Side Resident Dies from Stroke Thursday

Ralston and community were shocked Wednesday evening when word was passed around that Frank Howe had suffered a stroke of paralysis. He was in his usual health and left the house to go to one of the near neighbors, telling his wife that he would return in a few minutes; and when he did not come for half or three quarters of an hour she went to the back door to look for him and found him lying on the door step unconscious. He had returned from the neighbors as he said he would, and was stricken before he got in the house. He was carried into the house and a physician summoned at once, but he never rallied and passed away about 5 o'clock Thursday morning. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of everyone in this sudden taking away of husband and father.
Funeral services were held from the Ralston church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Howard Mintle of Cambridge, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. Harry Dirks of Boone. The pall bearers were all members of the M.W.A., namely George Hobbs, Henry Watt, Wm Slocum, L.H. Gregory, E.G. Boyes, and W.M. Bates. A mixed quartet, H.L. Copenhaver, Mrs. Hubert Knight, Mrs. Lyle Shay, and E.F. Buenneke sang, "Beautiful Isle," "Sometime We'll Understand," and "The Rifted Rock," with Mrs. Buenneke at the piano. Following the services, which were attended by a large crowd of sympathizing neighbors and friends, the body was laid to rest in Westlawn cemetery at Glidden.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr and Mrs John Deadrick, Mr. Henry Deadrick, Mr. Fred Deadrick and son, Mr. Will Deadrick, Mrs. Ethel Bilven, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Campbell, and Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Peterson, all of Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Jordan and son of South Dakota; Mr and Mrs. James Crippen, Mr and Mrs Fred Zeller, Mr and Mrs Albert Leek, Mr and Mrs Ralph Chapman, Mr and Mrs Bob Mingus and Mr Dale Smith all of Bagley, Iowa.
The following obituary was furnished for publication:
James Frank Howe was born July 11, 1858 in Cedar county, Iowa. He was united in marriage December 30, 1886, to Carrie Deadrick. Three children came to bless this union, one son, Eldon and two daughters, Linda Bruntlett and Bertha Harshbarger, all being residents of this community. Mr. Howe was one of a family of 10 children. His parents, two brothers, and one sister having preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Woodman Lodge for 30 years, being an officer in the Ralston local at the time of his death.
He united with the Christian church at Bagley, Iowa, shortly after his marriage and later his membership was transferred to the Ralston United Brethren church, being one of the trustees at the time of his decease.
Mr and Mrs Howe moved from their farm north of town March 1, 1923, to their present home in Ralston, where he passed away November 29, 1928, aged 70 years, 5 months, and 18 days, following a stroke of paralysis suffered the evening before, from which he never rallied.
He is survived by his wife and three children, all of whom were at his bedside at the time of his death, nine grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends are left to mourn.
The deceased was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen, ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was jolly and his cheery voice will be greatly missed about town as well as in the home.
"The days of our years are three score and ten; and if by reason of strength they are four score years, yet as their strength, labor, and sorrow; for it's soon cut off as we fly away."
