John Robert Burks served in the Missouri State Guard and was a Confederate at the Battle of Springfield against Fremont's Union Body Guard. John was also the great grandson of Edmund Roberts who was at the Battle Of Moore's Creek an early Revolutionary War Patriot victory in North Carolina.

John R. Burks, living about six miles northwest of Iberia, one of Miller County's oldest and most highly respected citizens, died Monday of an illness of several months duration. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 4th at the Livingston Cemetery by Rev. E.M. Vance, after which the body was consigned to the tomb in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives. We extend condolence to the bereaved.
