Sister Marielda Grzeskowiak, SSND
(née Mary Grzeskowiak)

First Profession August 10, 1934
Motherhouse
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Beloved aunt of Sister Constance Pytlik, SSND.

On a cold wintry day, January 22, 1915, the third and last girl was born to the Grzeskowiak family, later followed by three brothers. Baptized at St. Casimir Church, Milwaukee, as Mary, she became the soft spoken, gentle, gracious Sister Marielda, very approachable and a good listener, as described by her niece, Sister Connie Pytlik.

Mary enrolled, at five years of age, in North Pierce School, where she remained in kindergarten for only one week before being promoted to the first grade. The next year she was transferred to St. Casimir School.

At her First Communion in 1926, she was already aware of an attraction to religious life. After her eighth grade graduation, she applied to the SSND Juniorate, where she completed her high school education in three happy years.

In the Candidature she began a full schedule of college classes, and then spent a year at St. Michael School, Milwaukee, practice teaching in the second grade. After her first vows on August 10, 1934, she resumed teaching second grade at St. Michael for seven years, plus mentoring the candidates who came for their practice teaching.

The following two years she was assigned to seventh grade, and for the remainder of her teaching career taught on the junior high school level. For twelve of those years, her assignments included the duties of principal, superior, or both, besides teaching.

She received her B.A. at Mount Mary College and obtained her Master's Degree at Marquette University. She also took a course in theology, in preparation for the many summers spent teaching religion classes.

In 1983, relieved of classroom duties, she continued her dedication to education by serving as a library aide and tutor until she came to Notre Dame Health Care Center as a patient in 1990. From there she went to Mount Carmel Convent in Mount Calvary, Havenwood, and finally to Notre Dame of Elm Grove where she died on March 30.

In the eulogy composed by her niece Sister Connie, for Sister's funeral, the concluding sentence was, "And today we celebrate Sister Marielda's fulfillment of her heart's desire." She lived a full life of consummate dedication.
