After high school, Ray attended Concordia College for three years before serving in the army as a radar specialist during WW II. He was awarded three bronze stars for campaigns in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Settling in Florida after the service, Ray and Roy owned and operated Carlson Bros. Construction, clearing and building many of the roads and subdivisions in central Florida. They later owned and operated Carlson Bros. Dredging where their work included pumping fill for Cape Canaveral and building many of the canals for waterfront communities. In 1968, Ray went to work for Potashnick Dredging where he redesigned dredges for greater efficiency. One of those dredges was used to dredge the Harbor in Tripoli, Libya, a project that Ray was in charge of. Later, he built a power barge in Singapore and took it over the Indian Ocean to Dubai, United Arab Emirates where that harbor was dredged. He then worked for Power Systems, a subsidiary of Morrison Knudsen, as a start-up engineer on nuclear power plants. His job sent him all over the world, usually accompanied by his loving wife, Grace.
Raymond was a devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather. He was the kindest, humblest, and most giving person you could ever know, inspiring you to do your best without ever being critical. His concern was for others and never about himself. He was a true leader who loved an adventure and a challenge.
Ray is survived by his wife of 52 years, Grace Norman Carlson, son and daughter-in-law Lloyd Glen and Sabania Carlson of Pine Lakes, FL; daughters and sons-in-law, Don and Sharon Noel of Arcadia, OH; and Douglas and Marie Kroulik of Umatilla, FL; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brother, Roy S. Carlson, sister, Doris Paskewitz, both of DeLand, and many nieces and nephews.
Ray is preceded in death by sister, Elsie Aune, of Gatzke, MN.
