Robert Martin Combs' marker is the 4' marker on the left side of the picture. His wife, Mary Cathrine (Crawford) Combs' grave is the fresh grave just to the right of his in the picture. Mary Elizabeth Ducourt Hicks is the girl standing by the graves. She is the granddaughter of Robert & Mary Cathrine Combs. To the left of the picture, you can see a shovel that must have been used for digging Mary Cathrine's grave.

I was borned in Washington Co., Arkansas in 1842. There was 6 boys and 4 girls of us. I don't remember anything important of myself until I was about 7 years old. I can remember when all the neighborhood used to meet and have musters and sometimes would have a few fights. My father was a man of considerable noteriety. First he was justice of the peace then County Judge as long as he was in the office. He was a great man for machinery and built a mill on White River in 1847. Then we left my birthplace. my first work at a mill. I learned to drive ox team. First hauled saw logs then learned to run the saw. This went on with not much importance 2 years. Then I started to school about 3 miles. When we arrived, it was a small log hut with one door. In the south side, a fireplace 7 feet wide. In the east end, Old Riley, the teacher sit in one corner with a switch 4 feet long in one hand. Soon as I entered the door, my feathers fell. He cut his old red eyes at me. It almost made me shudder. At last it come my time to go up and tell who I was. I had almost forgot about being so bad scared. Then them two eyes fell on me and he said,

"Come here boy". I sprang to my feet and started across the _(punchen__ floor, stumped my toe and very near fell to him. He laughed and the scollers (?schoolers?) all laft. "Whose boy are you?" "Judge Combes." He looked astonished. He showed me a lesson and put me to work on it. This school lasted 3 months. I was pleased and learned a heap. My best gal was going. I will not mention her name yet. The old house was near the bank of Hickory Creek. We would go fishing down on the creek while Old Riley would take a nap at noon, I mean my best gal and me. We remained on that farm for 2 years. I was always a great papy boy and was always with him. He decided to move to Texas. My oldest sister had married and moved to Texas. I was the oldest boy then living. 3 brothers older than me was dead. Everything looked very gloomy to me at that time. I was then 12 years old. Then we moved from the river out some distance where my Uncle John Loyed (Loyd) lived. He had lost his wife, my mother's sister. He had 6 girls and wanted my mother to take charge of them which she did.

We remained there for several years. Now time had rolled on up to 1858 and my mother and uncle decided to marry and did. Then I was bent for Texas but Uncle John insisted on my staying awhile until he could sell his farm and he would come with me to Texas. So, I decided to wait. He soon sold and we set out. It was late in the fall of 1859. We started about November 20 and landed in Dallas City the 24 day of December 1859.

over the Pike's Peak gold diggings. There were quiet a lot of boys going and I decided that would be the thing for me to make a stake before we married and went to consult her over the matter. But, to my surprise, her consent was not to be had on that matter. I pled and argued but to no effect. She cried and pled with me and finally said, "if you go, I'm going too. I can't live that long without you." Then I wilted and give it up.

I began thinking of everybody at home and wondered if I should ever see them all again. Then some of the boys would get up some fun. I would forget the danger until another shot was fired. There we formed our first line of battle.

We had crossed Little Red River on a bridge about 5 miles above Cotton Plant. We was moving leisurely along when our column arrived at the mouth of a lane. The federals was at the other end about one quarter of a mile distance off. About that time a cannon shot past over us cutting off a few tree tops and dropped them amongst our men. "Halt" was the command. Then in line of _(latel)_ the count off and every fourth man hold horses.

While we was maneuvering around, the feds was making a flank move to cut us off from the bridge, the only place we had to get out. We had come in with 12 hundred men against about 8 thousand. We was pretty well picket and they soon found out what was going on and notified us. A quick little charge and we was gone flying
