Survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Daughter of Arshag and Varteni Der Avedisian who both died in it. After living in orphanages with her three sisters, they were sent to the United States where a distant relative Mamas Sherenian posed as their father. It was arranged by Near East Relief in Athens and they left from the port of Piraeus on January 15, 1925 on the S.S. Braga. After arriving at Ellis Island they were detained for some months until being let in on appeal in May. As a result their maiden name was always Sherenian in documents rather than Deravedissian. Zabel married Khoren Mukalian and they had a son, Yervant Edward Mukalian. Their grave says Mukalian in Armenian.
