Juan "Jack" DeSantis was born to Italian immigrants. He and his family came to the USA about 1903. They came to Paterson, NJ where his father eventually owned a grocery and candy store in their home. The family changed the name to Sands in about 1918.

Jack married Elizabeth "Girlie" Bell and moved his bride to Saddle Brook, NJ. The couple had two children, John, Jr. and Louise.

In about 1948, they moved to Phillipsburg, NJ, where Jack worked with his brothers, Albert, James and Charlie, at Sanco Piece Dye Works, until his death in 1952. Jack was outgoing and loved children.
