Freddie Beaton was born in Binger, Oklahoma on May 17 1923. His father died when Beaton was young, and his mother Edna remarried in the late 1930s. Freddie Beaton was residing in Chickasha, OK at the time of his enlistment.

Beaton joined the Corps from Oklahoma City on June 16, 1941, shortly after his eighteenth birthday. He traveled to MCRD San Diego to attend boot camp, and was selected for Sea School.
Beaton was assigned to the Marine detachment aboard the USS Arizona. He arrived at his new post on October 10, 1941, and had been aboard for less than two months when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
