George Rockefeller was Supervisor of Germantown in 1824, 1827, 1828, 1834, 1835. He was Town Clerk in 1821 and 1822. He was a Juror in 1811 and classed as a farmer.
He was a portly man of splendid physique. In politics he was a Whig. He was prosperous in business.
On the 26th of March, 1845, he with eight others went to Hudson, N.Y, in a large row boat and upon their return were drowned near the landing at north Germantown. First, they were run into by a sailing vessel when some of the party were drowned leaving a few in the boat, then they were almost immediately run down by a steamboat and the others were drowned. The party consisted of George Rockefeller and wife Margaret, his daughter Emeline, Rufus Lasher (a son-in-law), Conrad Salpaugh, Philip Salpaugh and his daughter Euphenia, Andrew Hover and Albert Rockefeller. Nearly all of the inhabitants of the town were in mourning as the result of the sudden deaths of these relatives.
