Smith Copeland was born 15 JAN 1773 in Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut, and died 21 JAN 1854 in Antwerp, Jefferson Co., New York.

The Federal style limestone Copeland House at 7 Van Buren Street, Antwerp, NY, overlooking the river, was constructed by Ezra Church in 1816 and retains the only intact residential Federal period entrance in the village. This 10-room limestone house was sold to Smith and Polly Copeland, innkeepers, in 1819, then deeded to Clewly and Theophilus Copeland and remained in the Copeland family through at least 1887.

Clewley Copeland died at Antwerp, August 28, 1878.
Fanny (Stowell) Copeland died December 11, 1890.

Clewley Copeland, born in Northampton, Mass., went to
Antwerp, N. Y., about 1823, and engaged in the business of
Farming and Hotel-keeping.

He retired at the age of 50 with a good fortune,— -supported
his father and mother and brothers, and sisters, and raised a
family of six.

He was an honest man, and led a Godly life.

Oliver Smith Copeland, second son of Clewley, was a Physician
and Surgeon, a graduate of the College of Physicians and Sur¬
geons of New York; became a Surgeon General in the War of the
Rebellion, marched with Sherman and has a good military record.

He died a bachelor at the Osage Mission, Kansas, December 23,

1872.

Charles C. Copeland, fourth son of Clewley, was a book agent
in Ohio in 1856, and also "stumped" that state the same year
for Buchanan; taught school in Kentucky in 1857-8; traveled
in all the South-western states in 1860 ; graduated at Albany Law
School in 1861; practiced his profession in Chicago until 1869,
at which time he retired with a handsome fortune; visited
Europe that same year, and again in 1870, going to the Vatican
Council and traveling through Italy, Spain, France, Germany,
Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and the British Islands. Sub¬
sequently he returned and established a ranch in Crawford
County, Kansas, and became a practical Farmer and Stock-
raiser.
