Rachel Brown Friend was the wife of John Friend. Rachel's parents were Samuel Brown and Frances Rachel Crow. John and Rachel Friend moved from Monroe, Amherst County VA first to Madison County KY and then to Prestonsburg, KY. John and Rachel owned and managed the Washington and Jackson Hotel in Prestonsburg which burned in 1848. John Friend was a magistrate under the old Constitution and later became sheriff of the county and was also jailer for 20 years. John was a soldier of the War of 1812 and received a land warrant for 160 acres as his bounty. John died in 1876.
