He served many posts including, Rhode Island State Attorney (1771 to 1777), Delegate to the Continental Congress from Rhode Island (1771 to 1779), and Judge of the United States District Court for Rhode Island from 1790 to his death in 1796. He was a Signer of the Articles of Confederation in 1777.
