Mary was a daughter of John Lewis (1729–1780) and Anne Lewis (~1731-?). She was born and raised in Virginia.
About 1782 in Virginia she married David Wood Meriwether; they were the parents of six known children: Anne Lewis, Martha Wood, Jane, Henry Wood, Mary Lewis and Sarah Lewis Meriwether. The family moved to the Louisville area of Kentucky in the mid 1780s.
David died young about 1795 and Mary married Martin Hardin on 13 Sep 1798 in Jefferson County; they had no known children. Mary died about the age of 35, in 1801.
