Gary was born to Leo and Judith Welsh. Following Leo's death, Judith married Nyals Sutter, who adopted Gary and his sisters.
Gary graduated from Coulter Alexander Latimer High School in 1966, the University of Northern Iowa in 1970, and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1973. He was an ordained minister in both the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church, and also worked as a substance abuse counselor at St. Anthony's Medical Center. Additionally, he took a number of culinary courses and became an excellent chef.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father Nyals Sutter and a sister Linda C. Olson.
Memorial Service was held at the Presbyterian Church of Hillsboro, MO. with interment at St. Peters Cemetery, Coulter Iowa.
