Soviet Political Leader. Served in the Red Army as a volunteer during the Russian Civil War. A member of the Communist Party beginning in 1927, he went onto join it's Central Committe in 1939. During the 1940s he became an aide to Joseph Stalin and was recognized as an expert in economics and industry. Kosygin held various other government and party posts before becoming the first Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Minister. In 1964 he succeeded Nikita Khruschev as Premier. In the 1960s his importance to the party began to dwindle but he kept his post as Premier until he resigned in 1980, due to ill health.
