Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on May 12, 1892 for his actions as a Major in the 147th New York Volunteer Infantry at the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia on February 6, 1865, during the final stages of the American Civil War. He joined the 147th in September 1862, serving until June 1865. Afterwards, he relocated to San Francisco, California where he died at the age of 77. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Seized the regimental colors at a critical moment and by a prompt advance on the enemy caused the entire brigade to follow him; and, after being himself severely wounded, he caused himself to be lifted into the saddle and a second time rallied the line in an attempt to check the enemy."
