Born to John Ficklin and Martha Jane Hopkins Ficklin in Tolono, Il. Her mother died when she was about a year old. She came to Iowa in the back of a wagon with her sister Annie. They were raised by their maternal grandparents. She married Harvey Hedges and had her first family. She divorced him and later married Charles Hedges and had three more children. Three of her eleven children and her husband died before her. One died on Christmas Eve and her husband died on Christmas day. When she died she left several grandkids, many of them redheaded and freckled like she was.
