Chas. Chew, 87, A Retired B.& O. Engineer Dies

Charles Calvin Chew, 87, of 208 South Franklin street, a well known retired B. & O. engineer and a resident of Garrett since 1889, died Sunday at 2:30 a. m. at his home. He had been in declining health for several years. A week ago he began suffering a series of cerebral hemorrhages, which caused his death.

The body was taken to the Zimmerman funeral home, where final rites will be held Wednesday at 11 a. m. The Rev. Peter E. Soudah of the Garrett Presbyterian church will officiate and burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.

Mr. Chew was born Oct. 4, 1865, at Shelby, O., and he learned the printing trade in his youth at the Shelby News. He later worked in a printing office in Cleveland. He started his long railroad career as a B. & O. brakeman on May 18, 1886, at Newark, O., and he transferred to Garrett in 1889. After six years of firing he was promoted to freight engineer in 1895 and to passenger engineer in 1913. He was engineer on the Capitol Limited between Garrett and Willard for eight years prior to his retirement on May 19, 1937.

Mr. Chew received a 50-year membership pin in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in 1949. He served as chief engineer of Garrett Division 153 for one term and he was a delegate to the Columbus convention in 1908 and to the Cleveland convention in 1930.

Mr. Chew and DeEtta Talbert of Garrett were married in Garrett April 27, 1904.

Surviving besides the widow, who has been a resident of Garrett since 1891, are two stepsons, Harold A. Talbert of Chicago and Lawson S. Talbert of Oak Park, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Eric Dilger of Bethesda, Md.; one step-granddaughter and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chew also was a member of the Presbyterian church, F. & A. M. lodge of Garrett and the Shrine of Fort Wayne.
