Fred was the 3rd child in four years born to Will and Mary Carle. His father was a machinist, but when Fred was very small his father's pelvis was broken in a car accident, and he was unable to work. The family moved to Olpe, Kansas, to live with Mary's parents while he recovered. When he was able to work again, they moved back to Bartlesville, where Fred completed his schooling, graduating from Bartlesville High School.

After graduation Fred went to work at Reda Pump along with his father and older brother. When the US entered World War II, he enlisted in the Navy as a SeaBee and was sent to the south Pacific. After the war he moved to California, where he married Jane Swanman and had a daughter. They divorced when his daughter was still a small child.

Fred later married Norma Elaine Benham, but that marriage also ended in divorce.

He worked at a casino for several years before his death from a heart attack.
