Owner of Ullenbruch Florist, Lapeer Road, Port Huron, Michigan from 1880-1926, known for his cultivation of 'Roses'
Mathias G. Ullenbruch founder of 'Ullenbruch Greenhouse and Flower Shop,' Port Huron, St. Clair Co., Michigan was born in Germany [Hannebach, Rheinland-Pfalz [Westphalia], Germany] on May 13, 1854. His family immigrated to America in the late 1860's [1871] and moved directly to Detroit. He found work as a gardener at the House of Corrections. He married Gertrude Marie Petri of Detroit, a native of Westphalia, Germany, in 1880. The couple lived in Detroit for two years then moved to Port Huron in 1882. Upon their arrival, he started the Port Huron Nursery located in the 1800 block of Lapeer on land owned by Benjamin Karrer Sr and known as the Park House - Karrer racetrack property. In 1884, when the purchase of the property was completed, the business name was changed to 'Math. Ullenbruch-Florist.' He advertised a wide variety of plants and flowers with roses as a specialty. He also had telephone and telegraph connections in the greenhouse, advertising prompt attention to all orders. In the 1890's due to expansion of the business, he moved the store to a location on Water Street. A few years later it was moved to 1029 Military across from the Hotel Harrington. After approximately sixty years in town, the store was moved back to 1839 Lapeer when the new store was built in 1959. Upon Math's death August 3, 1926, the business was divided into two parts. The Math Ullenbruch Estate, which was the property and greenhouses on Lapeer Ave., went to his eldest son Norbert J. and the downtown store to his eldest daughter Viola M.. Walter took over the business on his sister's death in 1948 and was again owned by one person. The business has been sold since Walter's death in 1990 but is still located on Lapeer Rd.
