US Congressman. Born in Hamburg, New Jersey, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced practice in Newton, New Jersey. He was the prosecutor for court of pleas in Sussex County, (1848-58, 1868-69), a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly, (1863-64) and president of the Merchant’s National Bank, (1865-78). In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and director of the Morris & Essex Railroad Company. He died at age 68 in Newton, New Jersey.
