Douglas was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 18, 1923. He was the son of John and Louise Newman Mathews. He grew up in south Minneapolis and graduated from South High. He was a football star at South, and when the Second World War started, he tried to volunteer, but was turned down because of a football injury. Doug moved to California in the 50s settling in Anaheim. He worked for Southern California Edison for 31 years. When he retired, he moved to Upper Michigan, where he died on August 6, 2011. Doug was cremated and his ashes were scattered on his favorite place, the Indian River Golf Club.

Douglas E. Mathews, 87, of Indian River, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs.

Douglas was born August 18, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of John and Dorothea (Newman) Mathews.

In 1986 he retired from Southern California Edison Company after thirty-one years of service. He has been a resident of Indian River since 1992. Doug loved to play golf and was a member of the Indian River Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife Claudia; daughters Michelle Aulwes of Minnesota, Antionette Mueller of California and Diane Kimmel of California; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister Muriel Baran of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
