Donald was the second child of John and Louise Newman Mathews, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 10, 1906. He grew up in near northeast and south Minneapolis. The family finally settled at 2213-16th Ave. S. Donald and his older brother John, or Lefty, both worked for Western Union as young boys, delivering telegrams. Don soon started working as a salesman in furniture stores. He married and had two children, then divorced. He remarried Anita Marie Jondreau and had several more children. He ran a store in Storm Lake, Iowa in the 1950s. Don and Anita settled in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. They were living there when Don died in the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home on April 21, 1986. Don is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
