He was born Nov. 24, 1946, in Peshtigo, to the late Russell and Lois (Bair) England. He graduated from Peshtigo High School with the Class of 1966 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 28, 1966. Don served our country in the Viet Nam conflict until April 1, 1969. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart as the result of being wounded.
Don and Judy Ziemer were united in marriage on Sept. 19, 1970, and celebrated their 40th anniversary with family and friends in September of 2010. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections for 28 years where he was instrumental in implementing the prison industries. Don was currently employed at Goodwill Industries in Ashwaubenon. He was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church in De Pere, serving as an Elder, mentor to many confirmands, member of the Men's Club, worked with the youth groups and organized the Men's Club fruitcake bakes. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League. Don loved to cook for large groups and prepared many meals for the N.E.W. Shelter for 14 years. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collectibles. Don loved spending time with family and friends and especially playing cards and other games — to win!
Survivors include his wife, Judy; son, Paul and wife, Lorrie, Illinois; daughter, Tori, Illinois; siblings, Chuck (JoAnn), Illinois; Nancy, Green Bay; John (Joan), Pulaski; Susie (Chuck), Indiana; Sidney (Julie), North Carolina; Allen (Karen), Peshtigo; sister-in-law, Kris (Joel) Bastian, Sheboygan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers, Glen, David and Russell, Jr.; sister, Judy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Iris Ziemer.
Friends may call at First United Presbyterian Church, 605 N. Webster Avenue, De Pere, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2011, and after 10 a.m. on Monday April 25, 2011, until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ray Larson officiating. Burial at Emmanuel Cemetery, Lark, Wisconsin. Marine Corps League Color Guard, Door Peninsula Detachment #1130 will accord military honors.
